“I thought burying my sister was the hardest thing I’d ever had to do,” she told Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Nadine Allen. “I thought we could just put it behind us and lay it to rest, but when this happened, I re-lived her death all over again.”

“This” was one of two counts of gross abuse of a corpse for which morgue worker Kenneth Douglas was sentenced Tuesday. In all, Douglas pleaded guilty to having sex with three corpses when he worked at the morgue from 1976-92.

Douglas was sentenced to three years in prison Tuesday for having sex with the corpses of Apling and Angel Hicks. That’s in addition to the three-year prison term imposed on him in 2008 after he pleaded guilty to having sex with the corpse of Karen Range who was murdered in 1982. He had sex with Range’s corpse which was bloody, its head almost severed and had been stored in the morgue cooler for hours.

Mishael Apling was just a young boy when his mother was killed.

Apling asked the judge Tuesday to send Douglas to prison for the maximum possible sentence.

“He raped a five-months pregnant dead woman,” Apling, now in his mid-20s, said.

The judge said Douglas’ crimes were depraved.

“There’s a reason we say ‘the dearly departed, may they rest in peace.’ What happened he isn’t even primitive. It’s depraved and inhumane,” the judge said.

Douglas, 56, of Westwood, apologized. “There is no excuse for my crime,” Douglas told the judge. “If I wasn’t under the influence, this never would have happened.”

Prosecutor Joe Deters believes Douglas violated many more corpses but he can’t prosecute those cases.

“He was, by his own admission, out of control,” Deters said. “If you extrapolated it, there are many, many corpses he did this to. ‘Scores’ is a good word.” But the prosecutor doesn’t have any evidence to prove those cases even though Douglas confessed to them.

“Just because someone confesses to something doesn’t mean they can be convicted,” Deters said. “We have to have evidence to prove a crime.” After DNA tests matched Douglas to semen in Range’s corpse, officials compared his DNA to body fluids on other corpses during the 16 years Douglas worked at the morgue.

Just two cases – those with Apling and Hicks as the victims – matched Douglas’ DNA.

In Christchurch District Court this morning, Jason Paul Somerville, 33, admitted killing his wife Rebecca Chamberlain, 35, and neighbour Tisha Lowry, 28.

Police found the women’s bodies under Somerville’s Wainoni house in early September. Tisha Lowry was murdered in September 2008 after she disappeared while walking home. Rebecca Chamberlain was killed on August 30, 2009.

The summary of facts in the case says that Ms Lowry knew Somerville and went to his home between 10.50am and 12.30pm on Thursday September 25, 2008.

This was two houses from where Ms Lowry was living with her grandfather.

Ms Lowry had previously been to the home of Somerville and his wife, Rebecca Chamberlain.

Police say Somerville was home alone and answered a knock on his front door.

He opened the door to find Ms Lowry standing there and invited her inside.

“Once inside the address a struggle has taken place, [Somerville] grabbed Tisha around her throat with his hands.”

Ms Lowry struggled with Somerville, kicking and punching him, but he tightened his stranglehold.

“[Somerville] increased the pressure of the strangle to a point where the victim was no longer resisting and had lost consciousness. [Somerville] continued to squeeze her throat until he was certain she was no longer breathing,” the summary of facts states.

He then forced a pair of his wife’s underpants into Ms Lowry’s throat, before removing her jeans and underwear and having sex with her.

Somerville was due to attend a meeting early that afternoon. Being short on time, he left the body of Ms Lowry lying on the floor of the cupboard under the stairs of his house.

He returned about an hour later with the knowledge that his wife was shortly due home. He removed the manhole cover on the floor of the stairwell cupboard, which led beneath the house.

Somerville dragged Ms Lowry’s body and lowered her through the manhole and left her lying semi-naked under the house before putting the cover back over the manhole and cleaning the house in anticipation of his wife’s return.

Ms Chamberlain returned to the home about 3pm that day and had no knowledge of what had taken place in her absence.

The following morning Ms Chamberlain left the house to attend a meeting, which Somerville knew would keep her away from the house for the majority of the day.

“[Somerville] has gone beneath the house and removed the remainder of the clothing worn by the victim. He again sexually violated her body by having sexual intercourse with her,” the summary of facts states.

“He then dug a shallow grave near where she lay and buried her body along with the clothing that she had been wearing.”

Ms Lowry was reported missing by family on September 28, 2008. A police investigation began and Somerville was spoken to on October 5, 2008, as part of routine inquiries in the area.

Somerville told police that he and his wife would often see Ms Lowry on the bus and about four weeks earlier she had knocked on their front door asking for another person.

Somerville also said that Ms Lowry came inside his house and they talked about the real estate agents that he was using to sell the property.

Somerville told police Ms Lowry had walked around his house and that he originally had assumed she was going to use the toilet.

He said after a short time he found her in their bedroom looking through the wardrobe and that he then asked her to leave.

The summary of facts says that about 9.30am on Sunday August 30, 2009, Somerville woke and attempted to have sex with his wife in their upstairs bedroom.

“She has not welcomed his sexual advances and has repeatedly said no to him.”

Somerville then went downstairs to the kitchen and made a cup of coffee before returning to the bedroom and trying again to have sex with his wife.

She has again refused and this angered Somerville. He placed his arm around her neck in a headlock fashion and tightened his grip, compressing her airway.

Once she was unconscious, Somerville felt for a pulse, but found none.

Somerville then placed his fingers on top of vital arteries and applied firm downward pressure to ensure there was no chance of his wife regaining consciousness.

He then took a pair of underpants and stuffed them into his wife’s throat.

“Once he established that the victim was no longer alive he proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her,” the statement continued.

“He dragged her body out of the bedroom, along the hallway, down the flight of stairs, where he forced her through the manhole in the stairwell cupboard and buried her body in the sand underneath the floorboards.”

About 2.15pm on Sunday August 30, 2009, Somerville phoned the Christchurch police and told them his wife was missing.

He told police she had left the house about 10.30am that day to go to church.

He said that she left without her house keys, which he felt was out of character and that her handbag, cellphone and bank cards were also left at home.

Somerville told police that his wife was a recovering alcoholic who was on medication for depression and that she had previously tried to harm herself after drinking.

On September 2, 2009, police spoke with Somerville again and established that his wife had still not returned or made contact with him.

The following day, Somerville went into the New Brighton police station and told police that he had discovered his wife’s prescription glasses and wedding ring in their letterbox at his house where they must have been placed overnight.

When interviewed further, Somerville admitted that he had killed his wife and Ms Lowry.

In explanation, Somerville said he had become angry with Ms Lowry and killed her. He also stated that he killed his wife because he felt deep anger at being rejected for sex by her.

Judge Noble remanded Somerville – listed as unemployed – in custody until November 27 for a pre-sentence report.

The Crown said the issue of preventive detention may arise at sentencing and it is likely to call for reports on the psychiatric state of the accused.

Somerville’s only previous appearance before the court was on a traffic related matter.

His house has been the subject of repeated arson attacks since the discovery of the women’s bodies.

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA – In a case of do-it-yourself male enhancement gone awry, a local man had to be hospitalized after a metal dumbbell ring became stuck on his penis and caused the organ to swell to five times its normal size, authorities report.

The incident, first reported by the Daily Pilot, began with the man’s ill-conceived attempt to enlarge his penis and ended Tuesday in a Newport Beach hospital room, where rescuers sawed the ring away and spared the man’s member.

Keith Jones, deputy fire chief in Costa Mesa, said the ring had been stuck below the belt for as many as three days, and that the man initially resisted treatment. “This was a patient that was obviously having some other issues,” Jones said.

The man, described as middle-aged, eventually relented and allowed city urban rescue experts to remove the ring in a two-hour, ultra-delicate procedure involving a pneumatic chisel that sent sparks flying around the operating room, Jones said.

The man’s condition isn’t known, but Jones said it appeared he remained fully intact. “I know (rescuers) felt that what they had to do, they did it effectively,” he said.

Maybe a chart such as this could have settled the matter in a more reasonable fashion

“I remember telling my husband that I had a bad feeling about the five Indian guys who were playing roughly amongst themselves on the night of the shooting before anything happened,” said Michelle Andrew, who was present on the night of the alleged murders.

In the dock are Brian Samuel Steven and his brother Leon who are facing four counts of murder.

Both are former police inspectors. On September 10 last year Shawn Strydom, Nick Jansen van Rensburg, Rory Menzes and Bruce Edwards were killed after an argument at the Merseyside Pub in Umbilo, Durban.

Police said the argument began when a patron of Indian descent made a comment about the size of a white patron’s genitals while both were at the urinals in the toilet of the pub.

Andrew told the court that on the night of the shooting there were five Indian males – among them were the Steven brothers. They seemed to be having fun and joking around with each other.

“I remember seeing one of the Indian guys talking to Rory and Thomas Vivian. He had come with the accused [Brian and Leon]. I could not hear what they were talking about but they were all laughing and having fun,” said Andrew.

Andrew continued by saying the Indian man went back to his table, then he returned to Menzes’ table with Brian who started hitting Thomas Vivian at the back of this head.

“Everybody went outside. I was at the bar. I heard someone shouting there was a gun,” she said.

Andrew continued by saying she went to the door and told the people outside the pub to come back inside.

“As I was trying to close the door accused number one [Brian] pushed me and I lost my balance. I regained my balance and saw accused number one pointing the gun in my face,” she said.

At that point, Andrew said, she remembered that Shawn Strydom pulled her back.

“As he pulled me back a gunshot went off and Shawn fell to the ground,” she said.

Following the shooting incident, Andrew told the court, the Merseyside Pub had lost a lot of customers.

Andrew said she did not remember seeing Leon on the night of the shooting.

The case was adjourned for Tuesday morning.

Being held at gunpoint by a naked 91-year-old man wasn't punishment enough

The World War II veteran encountered a drunken man who couldn’t speak English; 26-year-old Jose Pasqual was trying to fend off Thompson’s Rottweiler/Doberman pinscher mix, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Thompson pointed his gun at the intruder, who had just scaled a fence into his yard.

Pasqual took a step towards the naked man. Thompson fired a warning shot. That was all he needed.

Pasqual kept his distance until Palm Beach Sheriff deputies arrived on the scene. He tried to make small talk but Thompson couldn’t understand a word he said.

However, when deputies arrived on the scene, ordering Thompson to drop his gun, it accidentally discharged, sending a tiny bullet fragment ricocheting off the pool deck into his right shin.

The man who was awarded a Purple Heart during World War II for combat in Europe was treated and released from a hospital in a few hours.

It hasn’t been a good month for intruders.

Less than two weeks ago, a father and son in Miami beat a man to death who had scaled a fence into their yard. Police decided not to charge the pair.

Also, two other incidents of residents defending their homes against intruders occurred in Palm Beach County.

In 2005, Gov. Jeb Bush signed what is referred to as the “Stand Your Ground” law, which states that citizens who use deadly force in self-defense are immune from criminal prosecution and civil liability.

Before the passing of the law, deadly force only applied to intruders who entered the home, and even then people had the burden of proof to show they feared for their safety.

The current law now includes the area outside of one’s home, but the homeowner must “reasonably believe” that deadly force is necessary.

Some believe the law simply encourages vigilantism.

Paul Perito's penis implant

We may soon find out what a penis is worth.

Behold the plight of 62-year-old Coral Gables resident Enrique Millas. All the poor guy wanted to do was have sex with his wife of 25 years, Gloria. But he couldn’t. So he went to local penis guru Paul E. Perito, a urologist who touts himself as a national leader in penile implant surgery. And here our story swerves into Saw-caliber horror territory.

Even when everything goes right, Perito’s surgery is not for the faint of heart. The penile implant is a bendable silicone rod that looks something like an orchestra conductor’s baton. After the operation, which involves stitches, “swelling,” and “bruising,” according to the doctor’s website, patients “should keep their penis against the abdomen for three days with the supplied scrotal support.” (For a disturbing mid-surgery photo, view this page. Warning: It’s not work- or lunch- safe.) The patient will never be flaccid again — even at Thanksgiving dinner: “The implant leaves the penis in the erect state at all times, and the patient positions the penis for his comfort or activity.”

Anybody else having flashbacks to eighth-grade history class?

Millas’s surgery did not go well. His penis became gangrenous, and after thwarted surgeries to save it, Perito removed the battered organ. In a lawsuit filed his past August 31 in Miami-Dade court, Millas claims his diabetes led to the complications and should have dissuaded Perito from performing the surgery. Millas’s lawyer, Spencer Aronfeld, calls a man’s penis his very “essence” and mortifies Riptide with a description of Millas’s post-op life: He’ll never have sex again. He urinates sitting down. And he’s ashamed to look at his body in the mirror.

Perito could not be reached for comment, but his lawyer insists penis implantation is “appropriate” for patients with diabetes. Millas didn’t quantify the damages he’s seeking in the malpractice suit, which has Riptide wondering: How much is that penis in the dumpster?

There is, as it happens, an established local going rate for damaged manhood. In 2006, a South Beach bartender was awarded $1.5 million after urologists injured his penis in a wart removal surgery, leaving the member painfully curved and forcing the guy to take painkillers before and after sex. But at least he could still use his unit. This leads us to believe that in Millas’s case, even a mil and a half is a flaccid figure.

Gangrene: the disease to stop even the most devoted fetishist

Sixty-two-year-old Enrique Milla is suing his doctor for allegedly not informing him of the risks involved with the procedure.

Milla’s attorney says his client was not told that his advanced and uncontrolled diabetes put him at a greater risk of infection and said his client would have skipped the surgery if he were made aware of the potential consequences.

Dr. Paul Perito performed the procedure back in 2007 and Milla later contracted gangrene, forcing doctors to remove most of his penis.

Milla’s wife has also filed as a co-plaintiff in the suit.

Boiled frank and beans?

Speaking to CBS2 from the hospital where he’s recovering from 2nd and 3rd degree burns, Emmanuel Ojofietimi insisted he hasn’t cheated on her… lately: “Maybe 20 years ago, 15 years ago.” (He also tells the Post, “She kept nagging and nagging me all the time.”)

Oyindamola, his wife, is currently being held at Rikers in lieu of $100,000 bail. Yesterday nightly news crews hit the streets to gauge public reaction, and it’s interesting how many people couldn’t help but laugh a little, while simultaneously condemning this particularly gruesome act of revenge. Bellport resident Jessie Maldanado even admitted to CBS2 that she’s considered mutilating her boyfriend’s genitals if she caught him cheating. Her boyfriend, who was standing right next to her, sagely added, “I need to get that thought out of her head.”

Will he ever drill again?

OXFORDSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM – A UK carpenter has accidentally chopped off his own penis while sawing timber to build a cabinet, his mother says.

Stuart Keen’s mother, Edna, said her 54-year-old son had been cutting wood when he suffered the horrific accident.

She said surgeons were able to reattach the severed appendage.

“Stuart is a carpenter and uses sharp and sometimes dangerous tools,” said Mrs Keen.

“This was an unfortunate accident, but these things happen all the time to people in his profession.”

An ambulance spokesman said when paramedics arrived at Mr Keen’s Oxfordshire home, they found him bleeding in the bathtub.

“I have spoken to him and he is quite embarrassed about the whole incident,” said Mr Keen’s mum.
