SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA– When dancers at San Francisco’s Lusty Lady turned the exotic club into an egalitarian co-op, they found it tough to reconcile their lofty ideals with the aesthetic realities of the sex trade.

One of the first things the dancers did was to toss out rules about maintaining the same body type as the day they were hired, and ones regarding height-weight proportion. A list of acceptable hair colors was scrapped, along with a policy regulating the quantity and location of tattoos.

Now, larger dancers and those who might not be stereotypically “pretty” are welcome on the Lusty stage, but this emphasis on inclusion has brought difficulties for the 60 or so dancer-owners.

It all seemed so simple when they bought the dive.

Lilah Mayhem is pale with long dark hair and a thin frame, while Cinnamon Rose has shorter, red-streaked hair and a darker complexion. Wendy works the stage in striped pink knee socks and glasses, while another dancer wears old wedge sandals and a cheerfully curling brown wig. Many sport multiple piercings and tattoos.

After buying the club for $400,000 in 2003, the next step was to put themselves through guerilla business school.

The Lusties, as they call themselves, enlisted the help of other local co-ops such as Rainbow Grocery and Good Vibrations, a local female-run sex-toy shop.

They learned the ins and outs of running a collective business and hammered out articles of incorporation within days.

That's better.

All new proposals, from bylaw modifications down to buying new carpets, would need approval from general co-op membership and the board of directors. Every worker, whether support staff or performer, had the right to submit a proposal, and decisions would be made by majority vote via paper ballot.

But the theater’s mission statement, which seeks to break down hierarchy, made the creation and enforcement of managerial policies difficult.

“It’s hard, because we’d elect people to enforce our performance standards, but we hadn’t yet decided on what those are,” said former dancer Lili Marlene, who was involved in the transition. “Hygiene rules are easier.”

Dancers learned how to take disciplinary action against each other via new policies such as peer-based performance reviews. Each week performers evaluate their onstage colleagues, considering general appearances, customer interaction, and levels of eye contact.

The first years of self-governance were the most difficult.

“On a good day, it’s like Peter Pan,” said Lili Marlene. “On a bad day, it was like Lord of the Flies. We can do whatever we want, and there’s nobody to tell us what to do.”

The $10 cover charges collected during the one-night event were donated to ISOH (I-S-O-H/Impact), a Christian-based charity in Ohio that had no qualms about taking the money despite where it came from. After all, like the club’s manager Kenny Soprano said, “Charity’s charity.” Doing a little math here: $1000 raised divided by a $10-per-person cover charge boils down to exactly 100 charitable men (I’m just assuming here) who got their rocks off for Haiti. To the ladies of Toledo, Ohio: If your man stumbled in drunk and covered in glitter in the wee hours of the morning on February 7th, don’t be too mad, that lap dance he got was for a good cause.

No word on whether or not the dancers donated their tips to the cause. I guess the people at the Christian charity who collected the money could tell us. In fact, the dancers probably turned a nice little profit on the whole event. The increased business probably meant more $1 bills in the g-strings. So, was this an act of true charity on their parts, or a sneaky scheme to drum up bigger tips? Either way, some money was raised and people will be helped. And for their part in the whole thing, the strippers should be thanked. Thanks strippers.

The 29-year-old, who calls herself as Kenza, was told she could earn 2,000 pounds a month by using a web cam.

“I was told to wear wigs and heavy make-up so people wouldn’t recognise me,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

Since then, the vehicle has stopped driving around with girls stripping on the Strip.

One tour bus driver said since the truck hit the streets of Las Vegas, he has seen a few accidents and close calls from drivers trying to get a closer look inside the truck.

County commissioners questioned the safety and legality of having dancers climbing and spinning on poles in the bed of a moving truck, encased in Plexiglas. The company decided to halt the project before being forced to by lawmakers.

But now, they are ready to hit the road once again after a brief hiatus.

No one disputes that an on-duty Irvine police officer got an erection and ejaculated on a motorist during an early-morning traffic stop in Laguna Beach. The female driver reported it, DNA testing confirmed it and officer David Alex Park finally admitted it.
When the case went to trial, however, defense attorney Al Stokke argued that Park wasn’t responsible for making sticky all over the woman’s sweater. He insisted that she made the married patrolman make the mess–after all, she was on her way home from work as a dancer at Captain Cream Cabaret.

“She got what she wanted,” said Stokke. “She’s an overtly sexual person.”

Yeah, she wanted it. She wouldn’t have gone outside if she didn’t want it. Now here are some of the background facts that suggest very strongly that the cop had been stalking the stripper, followed her and deliberately pulled her over on a secluded stretch of highway:

Meanwhile, Park was on patrol in the southwest portion of Irvine. Prosecutors believe he was craving a sexual rendezvous, and so he watched for Lucy’s white BMW to leave the strip club parking lot, then tailed her, waiting for an excuse for a stop. Park insisted he’d been cruising on the 405 north and coincidentally saw Lucy’s vehicle weave and speed.
Kamiabipour, the prosecutor, shook her head in disbelief. She knew the facts–that the officer had waited at least eight or nine minutes before stopping the stripper on a secluded section of a highway that was out of his jurisdiction.

“He was stalking her,” she said.

Four months earlier, Park had stopped Lucy under similar circumstances. That time, he’d ignored a plastic drug baggie he’d found in her car and her suspended license. But the stop wasn’t a waste of time. After friendly chit-chat, the officer had scored Lucy’s phone number. Telephone records show that Park called the stripper the next morning. She told him she was too busy to meet.

On the witness stand, Park explained that he’d called Lucy out of concern for a citizen’s safety. He also shrugged his shoulders when Kamiabipour slowly listed the first names of nine Captain Cream female employees–Annette, Denise, Rashele, Marlia, Brandi, Andrea, Deborah, Laura and Shannon–whose license plates he’d run through the DMV computer in the weeks prior to his sexual encounter with Lucy. (Another coincidence, according to Stokke.) Jurors also learned that Irvine Police Sgt. Michael Hallinan had previously warned Park as they left work to stay away from the strippers.

Park, who works in construction nowadays, conceded that he’d been given the warning but claimed that he had no clue it was Lucy in the vehicle or that she had an invalid driver’s license, even as he approached her car window.

Kamiabipour believed she’d caught the 6-foot-3 cop in a lie. Records show he ran the bosomy, 5-foot, 110-pound dancer’s license plate before the stop, did not call for backup despite the potential for an arrest and failed to tell his supervisor or dispatch that he was leaving Irvine. Several Irvine officers testified that Park’s behavior that night was odd.

“[Park's] testimony was just incredible,” said Kamiabipour. Irvine city officials must have doubted his story, too. After an exhaustive police internal affairs investigation, they felt it was prudent to give Lucy $400,000 to make her civil lawsuit go away–for fear a jury might give her much more.

In a secretly-recorded phone call to Laguna Beach police shortly after the incident, Lucy recalled that she’d told Park she had no license. Park began “rubbing himself up against me,” she said. “Then, he said, ‘What are we going to do here, Lucy?’”

Park unzipped his pants, took his penis out and got an erection, she explained. “Basically, the officer made me give [him] a freaking hand job and he let me go. I’m so freaked out about it.”

(Lucy also told police, prosecutors and the jury that Park had also fingered her vagina and fondled her breasts before he ejaculated on her.)

“I was confused,” she told the Laguna Beach dispatcher. “He called me afterwards. I’m scared, you know . . . What’s an Irvine cop doing hanging out at a strip club in Lake Forest?”

Telephone records prove that Park made a 19-minute call to Lucy shortly after their encounter. The officer–who told the woman he was “Joe Stephens,” an Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy who had died months earlier–said it was a friendly call to make sure she’d arrived home safely. The stripper said he told her to keep her mouth shut.

And then Kamiabipour introduced the bombshell evidence from a high-ranking Irvine police officer: on the night Park tailed Lucy out of the city, the global positioning system in his patrol car had been disconnected without authorization.

“I checked and [the GPS] was not working,” said Lt. Henry Boggs.

An unexplainable coincidence, Park’s defense countered.

Ah yes, those unexplainable coincidences can be very convenient like that. A jury of one woman and 12 men acquitted the officer. After all, it was the Good and Virtuous Police Officer against the Slutty Stripper, right? Though, to be honest, after spending the last several years documenting hundreds of cases of cops lying on police reports, I’d be a lot more likely to believe the stripper.

Absolutely appalling. The good news is that a prosecutor finally was outraged enough to put a cop on trial; the bad news is that a jury didn’t care.

He spent all his money on strippers, wine & song, and like a fool he squandered the rest...

Among the revelers who erupted inside the Seattle Kingdome that night: Helen and Louis Ford, the Massachusetts couple who had adopted Robinson off the street when he was 10 years old. “We were hoarse by the end of that game,” Helen recalls. “Can you imagine the pride of seeing your son do something like that?”

Rumeal Robinson was a household name. Sports Illustrated labeled him “Mr. Clutch” and put him on the cover.

Twenty years and a lucrative NBA career later, Robinson’s tumble from glory, which has never before been fully reported, has been cataclysmic. Now 43, he’s a bankrupted “strip club addict,” according to his adoptive brother, Donald Barrows. Federal prosecutors have charged Robinson with fraud, and at least four creditors have sued him for unpaid bills in Miami-Dade County, where he lives. He’s had to give up Ducati motorcycles, a Maserati, and a $10,000 fully automatic M16 machine gun, among other things. He now bounces between Biscayne Boulevard budget motels, claiming to have “no money” or possessions besides a change of pants, according to a deposition he gave last year.

Even Robinson’s 65-year-old mother, Helen, has given up on the wayward basketball star. This past April, she was evicted from 2 Rumeal Robinson Pl., the Cambridge, Massachusetts home where she raised him. She contends he “scammed” her. “I’m not worried for him,” she says, “because he sure as hell wasn’t worried about what happened to me.”

His adoptive brother, Barrows, explains, “He was a good kid growing up, and he treated us like family. I don’t know where he went wrong, with what he’s done to my mom and scores of other people. It’s unbelievable.”

Phone numbers Robinson has used have all been disconnected. New Times’ requests for interviews relayed through three friends were not answered. Robinson’s Miami-based lawyer, Hugo Rodriguez, says he doesn’t have enough information to comment about the debts, the criminal case, or the matter of the Cambridge house: “I don’t know anything yet,” he says.

When Helen Ford first met 10-year-old Jamaican-born Rumeal Robinson, he was homeless in Cambridge, living on couches or in the stairways of Harvard College dorms, she says. She and her now-deceased husband, Louis, a mail carrier, had four kids of their own. But they also raised countless fosters in their modest home.

“I sat down with Rumeal and asked him why he was sleeping in hallways,” Ford recalls. “He started crying and said, ‘My mother doesn’t want me!’”

In 1978, 12-year-old Robinson became one of five kids the Fords would officially adopt. They watched him gain national fame in college and, in 1990, accompanied the 23-year-old to the NBA draft in New York City. The Atlanta Hawks took him in the first round and awarded him a four-year contract worth $4.29 million. “After his rookie season, he came to me, saying, ‘Ma, I’m going to do your whole house over,” Ford says. “I told him: ‘Do your job, get established, and save your money first.’”

As a pro, Robinson never lived up to expectations. He garnered playing time on six NBA teams from Atlanta to Los Angeles, but only once averaged more than ten points per game.

He made more than $5 million in NBA salary alone, but blew much of it on a strip club habit that would have made Pacman Jones blush. “He would go on binges of two whole weeks where he spent $20,000 a night at a strip club,” Barrows says. “Not only that, but he’d also have a bunch of the strippers come back to his place, get buck-naked, and clean his house for $500 or $1,000 each.”

Robinson’s financial troubles began when his NBA paychecks dwindled. In 1997, he was warming the Lakers bench when American Express Travel Related Services sued him, according to a Los Angeles County court file that has been mostly destroyed. The next year — his last in basketball’s big league — he declared bankruptcy and jilted four creditors, including Mercedes-Benz’s financing wing.

After a failed stint as a hip-hop producer in Atlanta, Robinson came to South Florida around 2000 and moved into a condo on posh Williams Island in Aventura. That September, according to state documents, he founded a real estate company called Megaladon Development, Inc. His grand plan involved turning a 25,000-acre plot of “raw ground” in his Jamaican hometown of Mandeville into a luxury resort called Harmony Cove, he would later testify in deposition.

In 2004, the 38-year-old Robinson began dating Stephanie Hodge, a 24-year-old Tootsie’s Cabaret and Booby Trap stripper who claims to have had several pro-athlete boyfriends, including former Miami Heat forward Chris Gatling. “A few months” into their relationship, Hodge would later testify, Robinson gave her a position as Megaladon’s $150,000-a-year “director of marketing.”

And then, federal prosecutors claim, the criminal scheming began.

Strapped for cash, he began looking for a loan, but his credit was shot. A friend introduced him to an Iowa-based Community State Bank officer named Brian Jermaine Williams, “who could get the deal done,” Robinson later testified. In October 2004, Williams authorized a $377,000 loan to Megaladon, prosecutors claim. The next day, Robinson wired a $100,000 bribe back to the rogue banker.

Over the next 18 months, the FBI claims, Williams authorized loans and wired more than $1.2 million to accounts controlled by Robinson, Stephanie Hodge, or her brother Steven. The total was kept to less than $500,000 per individual to avoid attracting the bank’s attention. Williams even altered the loan terms to give Robinson and his cronies more time to make payments.

He also leased at least three luxury Mercedes and BMW vehicles, and bought new Ducati motorcycles. When he didn’t pay those bills, creditors demanded the vehicles back. Since 2006, Robinson has also been sued in Miami-Dade Court for not paying the leases on two Mercedes and a 2005 Maserati Quattroporte.

He didn’t drive those precious vehicles very carefully. He has racked up 18 moving violations in Miami-Dade County since 2001, including twice driving with a suspended license. Robinson spent $1,500 of the business loan cash at Traffic Ticket Guy, a Deerfield Beach law firm.

In October 2006, Community State Bank won the civil lawsuit, and Megaladon was ordered to pay $538,000 in damages. But Robinson hasn’t filed a tax return since his NBA days, and when he was deposed by lawyers trying to figure out his finances, Robinson claimed his net worth was “zero.” Having been evicted from his Aventura condo, he was bouncing between motels and living on “$20 here or there.”

“Where are your possessions?” the deposing attorney, Gary Lehman, asked Robinson in February 2007.

“It’s in front of you,” Robinson replied, indicating the clothes on his body — before admitting, when pressed, he had a “different pair of pants in the hotel.”

But even in poverty, Robinson maintained VIP friends. Lehman asked, “What are you going to do about dinner tonight?”

“The prime minister of the Cayman Islands is coming in, so maybe he’ll pay,” Robinson ruminated. “I don’t know.”

Barrows, who lived in Miami until recently, recalls spending an evening with his brother in 2007: “He pulled up in a brand-new Mercedes SL500. He asked me if I had $20 for gas. He took me to seven or eight strip clubs, starting with Tootsie’s. He would buy a Coke and nurse it for an hour or two, and I didn’t see him give a dollar to the dancers.”

This past August 24, the FBI indicted Robinson, Hodge, and Williams for the roles in the alleged Community State Bank scam. The charges: bank fraud, bank bribery, making false statements to a financial institution, and wire fraud. On September 4, Robinson surrendered to U.S. marshals in Miami and posted a $50,000 bond. His trial begins in Iowa federal court November 30.

When Robinson was deposed for the civil suit, he blamed Williams. “You said it’s a violation of banking law; Mr. Williams is the banker,” he testified. “I didn’t hold him over a barrel telling him to give me the money.”

His girlfriend Hodge has since left him, stating in a deposition she now lives with a wealthy Miami doctor.

And earlier this month, Robinson sparked outrage in his hometown when the Cambridge Chronicle reported he had caused his adoptive mother to be booted from her home. Ford claims Robinson tricked her into signing a deed that sold the house to a business associate for $600,000. She received no money. Though Robinson assured her he would take care of the situation, he did nothing. In April, 2009, she was forcibly removed. Grandchildren living with her had to find other homes, and she moved to a small apartment.

Now she’s considering suing the boy she brought up.

“Tell her to get in line,” responds Robinson’s lawyer, Rodriguez. “We have bigger fish to fry.”

David Dueppen wants his Epiphany....No seriously, that's the kid's name

In court documents filed this week in Miami-Dade family court, Dueppen said he wants majority custody of baby Marilyn Epiphany.

“He has never denied paternity for the child and he would like to be very involved in the child’s life,” his attorney, Raymon Rafool, said on Wednesday.

Rafool said Dueppen, 42, should have custody of the child at least 70 percent of the time.

The former stripper, Beatrice Hernandez, 42, came forward last month to claim that she had been Dueppen’s on-again, off-again girlfriend since meeting him at Porky’s strip club about seven years ago.

Dueppen joined the priesthood in 1999 and was last assigned to St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Pembroke Pines. He took an indefinite leave of absence in August, after Hernandez reported the baby to the Archdiocese.

In court papers, Hernandez said Dueppen choked her during an argument over paternity and child support. Miami-Dade’s family court has issued a temporary restraining order.

Dueppen denied the domestic abuse allegations and is now looking for a job outside the priesthood, Rafool said.

Hernandez’s attorney, Michael Feiler, said Hernandez is “pleased Dueppen has acknowledged paternity” but wants sole custody of the child.

“Given the history between the parties and the allegations of violence, my client does not believe it is appropriate or healthy for him to be around the child,” Feiler said.
