A naked portrayal of the Mona Lisa, which was once attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, forms one of the highlights of the biggest exhibition ever held on the Renaissance genius.

FLORENCE, ITALY – The mysterious portrait of a semi-nude woman, looking straight at the viewer with an enigmatic smile and with her hands crossed, bears a remarkable resemblance to Leonardo’s world famous painting.

Hidden for almost a century within the panelled walls of a library, the portrait appears to have been inspired by the Mona Lisa, which hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris and was painted by the Italian master in the early 1500s. Read the rest of this entry »

p3-news-pic-cap-2MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – A student at a Melbourne TAFE has had his artwork removed from a public display after complaints it depicts same-sex activity.

Steven Carter, a visual arts student at NMIT Preston, told MCV he was asked to take down the photo collage last week, and that now it had “just gone”.

“No one’s informed me of anything, it’s just not there,” Carter said of the work, one panel of which includes a photo of a crucifix-dildo. Read the rest of this entry »

This is not the photo on auction, but we like it more and decided to use it. We know our audience.

We’ve seen it all (and more) before. But this nude picture of Carla Bruni is still expected to fetch a high price when it goes up for auction in Berlin next week.

Only ten numbered copies exist of the image of the French First Lady taken by U.S. photographer Pamela Hanson, and this one is being sold with a reserve price of around £3,000.

It was shot in 1994, at the height of Miss Bruni’s modelling fame when she was 26 and dating rock legend Mick Jagger.

The intimate bare-breasted image of the 41-year-old French president’s wife is 16ft by 24ft and is entitled Carla Bruni In Bed.

Though risque, the picture is far less revealing than the full-frontal photo of her which fetched £60,000 a year ago.

A nude sketch of Miss Bruni is also being sold in Paris next month as part of an exhibition of glamour girls called ‘Pin-Up’. Read the rest of this entry »

PJT-Paint-10 .jpgTORONTO, CANADA – Nothing like a nearly naked woman to grab Toronto’s attention. The B.C.-based organizers of the Canadian Bodypainting Championships are in town to pitch their idea for a touring show of bodypainters to the CBC investment-oriented reality show, Dragon’s Den. Model Amy Houlton led the group today along Front Street to CBC headquarters. Michael McKiernan joined them:

10:45: I arrive at the Royal York as Jeff King, chief artist and president of the company, is adding the final touches to the design on his easel: the body of Amy Houlton. The silver armour plates over her shoulder evoke Russell Crowe in Gladiator. An elaborate-looking sword sitting on the bed will later complete the look: “She’s a dragon-slayer,” Jeff explains. 090513-figurine-02GERMANY – If human culture seems obsessed with sex lately, it’s nothing new. Archaeologists have discovered the oldest known artistic representation of a woman — a carved ivory statue of a naked female, dating from 35,000 years ago.

The figurine, unearthed in September 2008 in Hohle Fels Cave in southwestern Germany, may be the oldest known example of figurative art, meaning art that is supposed to represent and resemble a real person, animal or object. The discovery could help scientists understand the origins of art and the advent of symbolic thinking, including complicated language. Read the rest of this entry »

The controversial Body Works shows of Gunther von Hagen have traveled throughout the world.

pilobolusSYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – THE dancing fungi have many disguises. Stacked vertically, they can be a tower on the Manhattan skyline. A quick dismount, a flurry of tumbles and twisting limbs and, voila, a Kombi is born. And a pistol, a group of chubby penguins and a shoe.

After three decades on the experimental fringe, the US dance troupe Pilobolus charmed the world at the 2007 Oscars with an extraordinary human-shadow-puppet interpretation of the best-film nominations.

Fame finally arrived, on the heel of a giant Prada stiletto. Read the rest of this entry »

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – Isabella Rossellini is a woman who wears many hats. Actress, model, writer, philanthropist. Now, Rossellini can add “filmmaker specializing in animal pornography” to that already impressive list. “When needed, I can have an erection six feet long and stick it inside a female,” exclaims Isabella Rossellini, clothed not in her standard designer fare, but in a paper mache whale costume, of which the defining characteristic is an attachment of a giant pink penis in full erection.

Hallelujah, season two of Green Porno is underway!

Rossellini writes, directs, and lends her acting chops to the quirky Green Porno series, which features the actress, donned in hilarious animal costumes, describing the various mating habits of members of the animal kingdom. VIDEO after the jump Read the rest of this entry »

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – In an effort to “humanize” our nation’s leaders, San Francisco painter Justine Lai has stripped them naked and done very naughty things to them.

In a project that can seem dirty, provocative, shocking and weirdly hot (maybe to someone who really likes history), Lai depicts herself in the throes of carnal passion with a series of American presidents. Lai refuses to shy away from the subject matter as she paints herself being spanked by Ulysses S. Grant, cuddling Martin Van Buren, and… well I won’t even talk about what she’s doing to Abraham Lincoln or James Buchanan. If you’d like to check out the entire (decidedly NSFW!) collection, check out her site at justinelai.com. Read the rest of this entry »

1084226MIAMI, FLORIDA – As the legend goes, Lake Worth artist Linton Ginther Jr. didn’t wait for a proper canvas to begin painting. As a child, his early work was painted onto nothing less than the family dog, an ornery cocker spaniel/poodle mix. Call it oil-on-fur.

The dog required a shave job to remove the paint. “She was more mad at the clean-up afterward than the actual painting process,” Ginther recalls. “Really, I have to say dogs make excellent canvases. I suggest everyone try one.”

These days, Ginther is a notable lowbrow artist whose giclee and poster prints—mostly of hot cars, tattooed punk girls or some combination thereof—are on sale at his Web site, Slushbox.com. He’ll join three other artists and photographers at the Cottage in Lake Worth this Thursday for an Art and Blues show to benefit the Lake Worth Playhouse. Read the rest of this entry »
