Lonely Man Stole Woman’s Knickers Off Laundry Line

CHESTERFIELD, UNITED KINGDOM – A MAN desperate for love was caught stealing ladies’ knickers off a washing line at Langwith Junction.

Chesterfield magistrates were told that Kevin Cope (34) had placed ads in the lonely hearts columns in the local press, but to no avail.

“He had a negative response from people taking the mickey out of him. He saw these knickers and went to get them,” said Denney Lau, in mitigation.

Paul Goddard was at his home in Langwith Junction on 24th July when he heard noises outside and looked through his kitchen window.

“He saw a man grab a handful of knickers off the washing line. He was shocked and asked the defendant what he was doing,” said Becky Mahon, prosecuting.

“The defendant dropped the knickers and said: ‘Sorry’ and ran off up the road and got into a car.”

Mr Goddard took the wheel and followed Cope, who pulled up at Ollerton and spoke to a man at the roadside before continuing his journey.

Mr Goddard then obtained Cope’s name from the other man and reported details of the incident and Cope’s vehicle at Ollerton police station.

“Nothing was stolen but he felt the items would have been taken if he had not intervened,” added Miss Mahon.

Cope was interviewed and initially told police he had never been to Langwith Junction in his life.

Cope, a cake factory worker, of Nicholson Street, Newark, admitted theft of ladies’ and girls’ knickers.

He was fined £149, with £60 costs last Wednesday, after the bench was told he had no previous convictions.

“He denied the offence to police at first because he was embarrassed. He is a very lonely person and he’s not had a girlfriend since school time,” said Mr Lau.

“I have no expertise in this department but I believe this was low-value theft.”

Mr Lau added that Cope was going through a difficult period because his father was ill and he had recently moved out of his parents’ home.
