SCOTSDALE, ARIZONA – Those in charge of security looked on with smiles and a bit of confusion as “Crazy Dave” stepped up to be frisked before entering this year’s Arizona Fetish Prom at The Venue of Scottsdale.

As it turns out, there is no set protocol on searching a man wearing a giant banana costume. Crazy Dave stood smiling in the door way as security informed him he could come on through but the maracas in his hands were not allowed. After a brief conversation security saw it Dave’s way and he was allowed to keep his maracas.

Dance on banana man. Dance on.

This year’s Fetish Prom, June 6-7, was an all night, 18+ party showcasing live music, dancing, bars, shopping and various performances.

Party goers were encouraged to express themselves through their dress. Kinky dresses, leather military suits, vintage tuxedos, gothic and bondage attire and more were just some of the fashions on display.

Arguably, the Fetish Prom is an event unlike most in the upper-class setting of downtown Scottsdale.

“I like the open mindedness of people,” Indigo Bloom said, “Since I have become more involved in the community it has shown me how judgmental I used to be.”

Bloom herself has recently begun to further explore her lifestyle.

“Currently,” she said, “I am involved in a master-slave relationship.”

Adding, “Having the courage to step beyond the fear of being judged and going out and exploring and stretching your boundaries is probably one of the most rewarding experiences you can give yourself.”

One of the most well received performances of the night came from Simon Blaise as he suspended one his “angels”, Dominique, between two posts using nothing but layer upon layer of thin polyvinyl wrap. Blaise refers to the process as “Blaise Wrap.”

The wide array of masks, whips, chains, collars, gas masks, leashes, tails, horns, fangs, handcuffs and of course, the occasional pair of maracas set the Fetish Prom apart from most north Scottsdale events.

The only costume not allowed into the event- your birthday suit.

Dave “The Minister of Pain” Ochoa had his white vintage tuxedo tailor made, sparing no expense for his first Fetish Prom.

“I didn’t go to my high school prom,” Ochoa said. “I did go to my Senior Ball.” Though in comparison he says, the ball was lame.

Others, like Sherice Coffey took advantage of the on-site vendors.

Upon entering the prom the first thing she did was purchase a whip.

“I just bought it,” she exclaimed.

Coffey spent a brief moment attempting to whip an unsuspecting photographer.

Brianna “Prissy-Midnight” Gilbert has been to a total of three Fetish Proms so far.

“If you are creative and expressive,” Gilbert says, “you don’t want to miss it.”

“The people here are just incredible,” Gilbert said, adding that the music and the scenery always make the event worth coming to.

The Delia Tobin came for the music.

“The bands,” Tobin said, “there is some amazing music to hear.”

Live performances included sets from Acumen Nation, Dj? Acucrack and Regenerator.

Regenerator, self-described as dark electronic music for the mind and body, opened up the night with a set list of heavy beats that drew a large portion of the crowd to the stage area.

Hardcore industrial-metal Acumen Nation, performing alongside Dj? Acucrack, finished out the night with some of their older material that the band played special for the event.

On-site vendors included El Vaquero Muerto Leather Art, Fetish Alive and Toys4Lust, who offered a $1200 raffle grand prize of a Total Torture Device. toys

The majority of those in attendance purchased $175 VIP passes that included a hotel room at Scottsdale Ramada Inn.

“I’m expecting excessive amounts of drinking, nakedness and one crazy pool party,” Ochoa said.

The Arizona Fetish Prom continued on through the night, ending only when the last person checked out of the hotel the following day.

Mitch Palmer helped coordinate and plan this year’s prom.

“Finally tally was 900 people,’ Palmer said, a figure that is just below the average of prior events that brought in an estimated 1,000 and 1,200 respectively.

The Fetish Prom is a Horns & Halos production. Horns & Halos sponsors many similar events throughout the Valley each year.

Bloom says she is looking forward to opportunities like the Fetish Prom in the future.

“It does not matter what you are into,” Bloom says. “If you are into purple furry things, leather or latex or even being beaten until you are black and blue,” she added jokingly, “Being able to express your own uniqueness in all of its myriad of flavors is a really cool thing.”
