KINGMAN, KANSAS – A Kingman High School class gets an eyeful of inappropriate material. Last week, students in a psychology class were learning about the Rorschach Inkblot test. The teacher was using an online website which showed different inkblots and asked students questions. But on one of the questions, instead of educational material, a pornographic video started playing. As soon as that happened, the teacher shut down the computer which had been projecting the image on the classroom wall. The teacher had used the website before and never had any problems with it.
“It’s something we used prior and it’s always been a good educational tool,” said Superintendent Scott Carter. “Someone took it over and embedded some inappropriate material in it this time so we won’t be using that site anymore.”
For districts like Kingman-Norwich who try to incorporate web information in the classroom, it’s a constant challenge. High-tech hackers can even get around the best computer blocking software.
“We run a very extensive filtering system for all the computers in the school and this site even got around our filtering system,” said Carter.
The school did send a letter home to parents explaining what happened. No parents have called to complain.
The school has put a manual block on the website so it can’t come up again.
