Ronald Vikash Gander, 27, and his 16-year-old girlfriend devised a plan to prostitute a teenage girl so they could afford the weekly $1,050 rent on a serviced inner-Brisbane apartment, the Brisbane District Court was told.

The court was told the girl made $4,500 for having sex with five middle-aged men in June last year.

Gander and his girlfriend used the money for living expenses and paid the girl nothing except for the occasional box of chicken nuggets.

The court was told Gander’s girlfriend – who cannot be named – threatened the student, who had run away from home, with eviction if she didn’t continue having sex with clients to earn her keep.

Judge Marshall Irwin described the prostitution offences as “sordid”.

“The girl was used as if she was a piece of meat … and your conduct can properly be described as that of a sleaze merchant,” Judge Irwin said.

Gander pleaded guilty on Monday to one count each of procuring prostitution with a circumstance of aggravation and knowingly participating in the provision of prostitution with a circumstance of aggravation.

The court was told he had a substantial criminal history of dishonesty offences, and that he was on parole when he committed these offences.

Gander was jailed for six years in 2004 for 15 charges relating to an attempt to pull off a multi-million dollar fraud involving the sale of a Brisbane high-rise building.

That sentence was reduced to five years in 2005 by the Court of Appeal, and Gander was released in 2007.

Judge Irwin sentenced Gander to two and a half years’ jail, to be suspended after nine months, for the latest offence.

NORTH POLE – The Catlin Arctic Survey are trekking 700 miles to the North Pole to measure the thickness of the shrinking Arctic icecap.

However due to the proximity to magnetic north the compasses are “going haywire”. The freezing conditions also mean the latest global positioning satellite or GPS equipment will not work.

Therefore the team have to rely on navigating using the position of the sun. When it is cloudy they rely on following the direction of the wind helpfully indicated by a pair of lacy knickers shredded and stuck to the end of a ski pole.

Mr Hadow, who was the first person to trek solo to the North Pole, said the knickers were kindly donated by a supporter of the expedition.

Speaking from the Arctic via satellite phone, he said: “It an entirely genuine situation. If you can get gossamer thin material and attach it your ski pole it is particularly useful for this project because we can cannot use the compass as we are so close to magnetic north and it is too cold to use the GPS.

“The knickers have taken up a whole new value operationally.”

Navigator Ann Daniels explained why the knickers were so useful.

She said: “Due to our proximity to the Magnetic North Pole, our compasses are currently going haywire. The earth’s strong magnetic field on this part of the ocean means that the compass needle simply spins uselessly in its housing. As such, we’re currently relying on more traditional methods for day-to-day navigation, using the sun (for those few precious hours each day when it graces us with its presence), and using wind direction, as indicated by the panties…”

Mr Hadow and his team are having to take a route that has never been taken before so they can get the best readings for scientists. They were also forced to leave during the winter, when there are few daylight hours, before the ice has melted further.

This has made it a particularly gruelling trip. The team has walked through rubble fields, over thinning ice and had to evacuate camp after the ice broke up around them. Mr Hadow said he is having to spend up to three hours in temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius and below to drill down and measure the ice after hard days trekking.

So far the team have covered almost 62 miles (100 km) and expect to have to swim through open water to make it the Pole by May or June.

However Mr Hadow was confident the expedition will make it.

He said: “We have no plans to change the route. It is proving difficult but we are going to bite the bullet and do what explorers do and get on with it.”

The results of the Catlin expedition, which is supported by WWF and Prince Charles, will be fed to scientists and used to inform an international deal on climate change at the end of this year.

Tatiana Bastos denies wounding Mr Morais.

Tatiana Bastos (28) pulled a six-inch knife from her handbag and attacked Ricardo Morais without warning while he was driving, Lincoln Crown Court heard.

Caroline Bradley, prosecuting, said Bastos, of High Street, Lincoln, turned up unexpectedly at Mr Morais’ workplace.

She attempted to make sexual advances towards him, but was rebuffed.

“He got into his car to go back to do his shift but Bastos followed him. She jumped in the car and refused to get out,” Miss Bradley said.

“Miss Bastos then leant over and bit him on the arm. He could feel the pain of the bite.

“She then produced from her handbag a kitchen knife with a blade in the region of 15cms long.”

Miss Bradley said that when Mr Morais asked what she was going to do Bastos replied “I’m going to kill you and then I’m going to kill myself.”

“Within seconds she stabbed the knife into his groin,” said Miss Bradley.

“It went in through his jeans, his thermals and his boxer shorts.

“He could immediately feel the pain and the cold of the knife on his penis.”

Bastos denies wounding Mr Morais with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in Newark Road, Lincoln, on 21 May 2008.

She also denies perverting the course of justice by making a false allegation of sexual assault on 23 May 2008.

The trial continues.

Township resident Richard Cavanaugh, 45, pleaded guilty to third-degree official misconduct and lost his job and pension, according to a statement from the state Attorney General’s Office.

The Police Department suspended Cavanaugh without pay in October, when investigators started looking into what they claim was a tryst with a prostitute in December 2007 at a motel on the Black Horse Pike in the West Atlantic City section of the township. Cavanaugh was in uniform when he drove in a squad car to the motel, where a prostitute performed a sexual act on him, according to the statement.

Cavanaugh worked his entire 23-year career with the Egg Harbor Township Police Department. His plea prevents him from ever seeking public employment again. Reached at his home Friday, he declined comment.

It is unclear why it took more than a year to charge Cavanaugh. That happened Friday, when he also pleaded guilty and resigned from the department, according to the statement.

The prostitute cooperated with authorities and was not charged, according to the Attorney General’s Office. Spokesman Peter Aseltine declined to comment on whether authorities contacted the prostitute before or after getting the tip that sparked the investigation. He also declined to name the motel.

Police Chief Blaze Catania declined comment beyond issuing a statement in which he called the incident “troubling.”

“This situation involves the behavior of one person. … In no way should it reflect on any of the 124 honest, truly dedicated, hard-working police officers and civilian employees that make up this police department,” he wrote in the statement.

Cavanaugh pleaded guilty Friday before Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Albert J. Garofolo. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 29, according to the statement.

The state is seeking five years of probation under the plea agreement, the statement said.

Cavanaugh’s attorney, Louis Barbone, did not return calls seeking comment Friday.

This is not the first time Cavanaugh has been the subject of an investigation. A grand jury in 2002 cleared him of wrongdoing in the shooting of motorist Virgil Wright, then 41, after he attacked Cavanaugh during a traffic stop on the Black Horse Pike.

Cavanaugh had stopped Wright at about 9 p.m. July 29, 2002, near Garden State Fuel on the Black Horse Pike. As Cavanaugh was taking down Wright’s information, Wright started punching him, then reached for his gun. The scuffle continued and Cavanaugh fell. Wright then started kicking the officer. Cavanaugh then noticed a knife in Wright’s hand and fired two shots. Wright posted bail after being treated for his injuries and was a fugitive for about four years. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison on charges of assault and disarming a law enforcement officer.

Cavanaugh was honored in 1999 with a life-saving award from the Police Benevolent Association Mainland Local 77.

SINGAPORE, CHINA – Some men will go to extremes for the sake of sexual stimulation. And they are not necessarily weirdos.

The typical penile strangulation patient could be someone standing next to you on the bus or a colleague in the next cubicle, say urologists.

Dr Chin Chong Min, senior consultant urologist at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, said men who put foreign objects on their private parts do so ‘to enhance their erection, thinking that the simple way is to create a blockage’.

Professor Peter Lim, senior consultant urologist at Gleneagles Hospital, has seen many cases of penile strangulation in his 29 years of in urology. He estimates that Singapore hospitals see at least two cases a year.

And, he added, there are probably four or five cases that go unreported each year.

The patients could be Mr Average.

Said Prof Lim: ‘They’re not weirdos. They could be anyone, young and old.’

Most patients in such embarrassing situations are naturally sheepish about their condition. They are ‘usually quite silent’ when they first visit him, said Prof Lim. One patient entered his clinic one day in 1998 and declared, ‘I did something stupid’.

Prof Lim said: ‘That was the most honest thing I had heard (coming from a patient).’

The patient had placed a nut (as in nut and bolt) on his penis. ‘He could have taken it off easily if he had tried to remove it earlier, but he had an erection and the penis ballooned,’ said Prof Lim.

Doctors had to use an orthopaedic saw – usually used as a last resort – to remove the nut.

Prof Lim said: ‘It’s a crazy, stupid thing to do.’

So why do they do it?

‘They want to get a sexual ‘high’. It’s a form of sexual deviation,’ he said. ‘They’re not aware that it will strangulate the penile area. Congestion occurs and the penis becomes more and more swollen.

Deep trouble

‘When they can’t take it (the object) out, they realise that they’re in deep trouble.’

Besides penile strangulation cases, Prof Lim has encountered unusual cases in which an object had made its way into unexpected places.

One rare case involved a patient who had put a closed safety pin into his urethra – a tube in the penis that discharges urine from the bladder – so that he could ‘get sexually aroused’, said Prof Lim.

But the safety pin slipped into his bladder.

Prof Lim used an instrument called a cystoscope to remove it.

Another patient had a bottle stuck in his rectum. The man did it ‘to stimulate his prostate’.

That’s because ‘the G-spot for men is located at the back of the prostate’, said Prof Lim.

In many cases, Prof Lim uses liquid paraffin as a first option to try to slip the object off the penis.

‘But when it’s very swollen, sometimes we have to use a saw,’ he said.

Prof Lim added: ‘In extreme cases, the penis can turn gangrenous and the whole thing can drop off because of tissue death. If so, it may have to be amputated to prevent serious infection which attract bacteria that can enter the blood stream – causing death from septicaemia (blood poisoning).

‘Also secondary haemorrhage from open blood vessels at the grangrenous tissues can cause the patient to bleed to death’

Prof Lim, however, has not come across cases with such serious complications. ‘It’s not likely that anyone here will die from it. If the patient has a swollen penis and a raging fever, it’s likely that he will seek treatment before it gets to that stage,’ he said.
