Not the pooch in question, just another crotch-eating bandit
Port Elizabeth residents Monika Romer and her husband Werner have been fighting an uphill battle with their destructive miniature dachshund, Heidi.
In her short life, angelic-looking Heidi has pilfered underwear galore, which she buries in pots and flower-beds in the Theescombe couple‘s garden.
“She‘s an amazing dog, but she‘s naughty and can‘t be left alone,” said Monika. “My neighbour even gave Heidi underwear for Christmas. We‘ve lost more than 30 pieces of underwear since we got her three and a half years ago.”
But this pooch is picky, choosing to grab only freshly-washed knickers from the wash basket.
“She has always had this penchant for stealing underwear,” Monika explained. “She steals it from our clean washing pile and then takes it and quickly buries it in the garden.”
Heidi‘s secret fetish is not surprising. A survey released in London earlier this month revealed small dogs such as the chihuahua caused as much damage as their huge cousin, the Great Dane. And included in the table of mischievous mutts was the dachshund, which was found to cause an average of £444 (about R6400) during its lifetime.
“You don‘t see your underwear and next time you look into the garden, you see a piece sticking out of the backyard soil,” said an exasperated Monika. “I don‘t believe in giving her bones, so maybe that‘s why she does this.”
