The sexually explicit photographs and video of Manaudou, 21, appeared on the Internet and less risque pictures circulated in Italian newspapers.
The 21-year-old has won Olympic, world and European gold medals and set world records to confirm her reputation as one of the greatest female middle-distance swimmers of all time.
Her ex-boyfriend, Italian swimmer Luca Marin, has denied releasing the photographs.
The couple allegedly argued during the European short-course championship in Hungary Dec. 15 where Manaudou placed first in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing nearly 3 seconds ahead of Italy’s Federica Pellegrini.
Manaudou said the sexually explicit material left her feeling “violated” and the French media expressed outrage over their release.
She angered French fans when she relocated to Italy to be with Marin but was later fired by her Italian club for “attitude problems,” Skynews said.
Manaudou had already qualified for the 400 in Beijing but tossed away her chance of entering the 200 when she pulled out of the event at the French championships, even though she still holds the world record.
She did qualify in the 100 and 200 backstroke, giving her three individual races to contest in Beijing.
