TULSA, OKLAHOMA – A woman accused of having sex with dogs was set to enter a plea bargain after police confiscated personal videos showing her in the act, Tulsa County Chief Deputy George Haralson said. But that was before Diane Sue Whalen found out she would have to register as a sex offender as part of the deal.

“When she found out she would be a sex offender, she didn’t want to do that,” he said. “Now we don’t know what they are going to do.”

Whalen, 54, and her boyfriend, Donald Roy Siegfried, 55, will be arraigned in district court Monday on charges of “crimes against nature.”

How are the dogs?

Haralson said the tapes that allegedly show Siegfried and Whalen sexually abusing the animals almost cost the dogs their lives, but he received an e-mail this week saying two of the three dogs are alive and doing well at a no-kill animal sanctuary in Utah. The third dog remains in the custody of the Tulsa County Animal Shelter.

After receiving pressure from animal rights groups, the sheriff’s office decided the dogs were victims and that they would try to find an organization that would try to rehabilitate them.

Whalen relinquished her ownership of two of the dogs, but Siegfried’s blue heeler, Merlin, proved more complicated, Haralson said.

Apparently, Siegfried has another live-in girlfriend, Haralson said, who claims the blue heeler is actually her dog. The ownership of the dog will be decided by a judge following the arraignment. Officials say they will find a suitable home for Merlin, if given ownership.

Items found at the scene

The sheriff’s office was notified of the situation after Whalen’s son apparently stumbled across a DVD with a label that read “Mama’s Loving Boys” and depicted his scantily clad mother in a suggestive position, along with a picture of the three dogs.

After viewing a portion of the video, the son called authorities.

Deputies reported finding in the Whalen home more than 70 VHS tapes and some CDs, along with eight dog boots — apparently used to cover claws — seven leashes, six dog collars and a can of dog cologne.

Also found at Siegfried’s home was a homemade device authorities have identified as a Sybian sex machine.

Haralson said Siegfried apparently was making and selling the motorized sexual devices, which can sell for as much as $1,400 on some commercial sex toy Web sites.
