A 74-year-old Vancouver man faces charges of assault and menacing following an incident at Rooster Rock State Park where he allegedly beat a man and the man’s small dogs with a collapsible police-style baton.
The suspect, Donald Joseph Kenney, was naked at the time.
Rooster Rock permits nude sunbathing.
According to a release from the Oregon State Police, Kenney was arrested July 25 on charges of second-degree assault and menacing and was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail.
The alleged victim, a 45-year-old southeast Portland man, called police July 24 to report an assault. The man said he’d been rafting that day with his four children and two Chihuahuas when they landed on Sand Island, near the clothing-optional area. He said his dogs ran on the beach and the suspect struck the dogs with a baton.
“The nude suspect allegedly walked toward the victim and children then raised his arm up, holding a can of mace,” Lt. Gregg Hastings wrote in the news release. “The victim backed up, causing him to trip and fall backwards, at which time the nude suspect struck the victim in the head, torso and right leg with what was later determined to be a collapsible baton.”
The suspect left the park. He was traced through his license plate number.
Hastings said that Kenney, a frequent visitor to Rooster Rock, returned the next day. A park ranger alerted police, who came and arrested Kenney.
Kenney remains in the Multnomah County Jail on $250,000 bail.
