Former Carter County jailer, Dawn Marie Heading was arrested Monday morning, accused of having sex with an inmate. The 25 year old was charged by a Carter County Grand Jury on July 17. She faces 5 counts of sexual contact with an inmate. According to a police report, Heading recently asked for a leave of absence because she is 3 months pregnant.
Sheriff Chris Mathis said on Monday afternoon that he was very disappointed with Heading, who had only been with the department for about one year.
“Anytime law enforcement arrests one of their own, it always puts a black mark so to speak on law enforcement,” Mathis said.
Mathis said there were at least five occasions when Heading and inmate, Phillip Greenwell had sex inside the jail over about a two month period.
He said that Greenwell will not be charged in the case, but has been moved to another jail.
Heading was released from jail on bond Monday afternoon. She is expected in court on September 19th. Mathis said this is the only case of a relationship between a jailer and inmate that he is aware of.
